The Right to Die — Leigh Meinert, DignitySA

District raid · visiting Rotarians welcome

Leigh Meinert of DignitySA joins us on Thursday 10 September to speak on the Right to Die — and we are opening the evening as a district raid, so Rotarians from other clubs are warmly invited to join us.

Few subjects ask more of us than this one. DignitySA campaigns for the right of terminally ill South Africans to choose a medically assisted death. In April this year the organisation filed a motion in the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria, asking the court to declare the blanket prohibition on Medical Assistance in Dying unconstitutional and invalid. Should the challenge succeed, Parliament would have 24 months to write the legislation. The case draws on reports from fifteen foreign experts across six countries, and from South African practitioners who hold that our healthcare system could implement and manage such a framework responsibly.

It is a debate that turns on the things Rotarians weigh often — dignity, compassion, personal autonomy, and the duty of care we owe the most vulnerable among us. Thoughtful people land in very different places on it. Leigh will set out the case DignitySA is making, and there will be time for questions and discussion afterwards. The club takes no position on the question; we simply think it is one worth discussing properly.

Marshalling for the animals at the Festival of Running

Wynberg members braved a cold, wet Sea Point dawn to marshal for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA

The Rotary Club of Wynberg was out on Sea Point Promenade before sunrise on Sunday, marshalling for the Cape Town Festival of Running — the first year the Cape of Good Hope SPCA has been an official beneficiary of the event. The club took the Sunday shift of the two-day festival.

It was a cold, wet Cape winter morning. Members and friends of the club signed in under the race tent in the dark, collected their hi-vis bibs, flags and Team SPCA beanies, and were briefed and posted along the route before the first runners came through. From there it was three hours of pointing the way, holding intersections and cheering the field on — 5 km relay legs, 21 km runners and the 50 km ultra athletes, all of them raising money for animals in the spirit of Madiba's birthday weekend.

The club banner flew alongside the SPCA gazebo at the start, and the rain did nothing to dent the mood. Our thanks to Stacy for organising the club's part in the day, and to every member who gave up a dark, drizzly Sunday morning to stand on a corner for the animals.

Dropped stitches and warm beanies for Mandela Day

Members and friends spent a Mandela Day afternoon at Kath's learning to loom knit for our partner organisations

What a wonderful way to celebrate the spirit of Mandela Day!

Members of the Rotary Club of Wynberg, together with friends, gathered for an afternoon of fellowship, laughter, drinks, snacks and learning as we mastered the art of loom knitting. Our goal? To create warm beanies for our partner organisations and help make winter a little warmer for those who need it most.

There were plenty of laughs, a few dropped stitches, and lots of encouragement, proving once again that service is even more meaningful when shared with friends.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the afternoon such a success. We can't wait to see our growing pile of beanies making a difference in the community!
